Brief Description: Finish Firewall
|
|
Finished the firewall. Funny how ya think, "Oh, it's just riveting....1/2 hr max...." Hah!
Some rivets are occluded by other parts, so some have to be riveted before the others. Then, some holes have to be smoothed-out with the drill bit. Then, there's the errors to correct.
As an example, I'm going to install the new-for-Zenith "donut" suspension for the nose wheel. Instead of the bungee cord, there's now a series of 10 rubber donuts separated by steel washers that are more forgiving of landings and don't wear out anywhere near the bungee cords. I have not yet purchased the new retrofit, but I knew not to rivet all of the holes for the nose gear in the bearing area. I counted correctly, but after I riveted one side of the gussets, I thought I should check a log entry of a guy who's already installed one. Yup; got the count right on the rivet holes to delay riveting, but I started counting at the top, and I was supposed to start counting on the second row from the top. Oh well, only one side.
Other than that, just the tedium of riveting; lots of using the hand-riveter as well for tight spots that the pneumatic tool just doesn't reach...
