Brief Description:  Crankshaft Dimension Checks

Found a local shop that will do magnafluxing. May give them a shot first; since this is an experimental aircraft, no FAA repair station or yellow tags are needed, nor applicable. The national shop I spoke with yesterday talked all gloom and doom about Continental prop strikes and the very low number of acceptable cranks resulting from them.

Using a dial indicator on the prop flange, determined there was only .001" of runout, well within the allowable .005" limit. Crankpin diameters and main bearing journals were right at or under service limits.

Oil pump housing was scored a bit, looking like some type of grit got in the pump and was pushed in the housing. Checking with an IA, he mentioned that he's see far worse, and gave some suggestions for cleaning it up a bit. Gear to housing clearance was .004, well within the .008" limit.
