Brief Description: Prop governor
|
|
The was a classic example of something that should have taken a few minutes to do and yet ended up taking about 5-weeks. It all started with installing the studs that the prop gov hangs on. My problems began when I discovered the studs were too short. So I needed to pull all 4. 2 came out easily, but 2 wouldn’t budge and I was stripping nuts. I even tried heat, but they wouldn’t budge. With the help of my fellow RV-10 builder Tim Nash, his longer wrench (more leverage) and 3 nuts, we got them off. On to the internet, I located and bought 4 new and longer studs. A week later, the studs arrived and I eagerly began to install them, until a huge problem developed. The fourth stud was being stubborn and the nuts started slipping. After multiple attempts, I realized I was seeing metal around the nuts. Concerned I used 3 nuts and removed the stud, but my fears were confirmed – somehow the nuts had cross-threaded and stripped the stud. Nothing to do but order a new one—mounting the prop gov would have to wait another week, which turned into a month because as luck would have it, the damn studs were backordered. Eventually, the new stud (and on extra just in case) showed up and I was able to install it and the gov without further incident. I’m now beginning to understand the genesis of the phrase 90% done, 90% to go.
