Brief Description:  Instrument Panel #1

I’ve working on the panel in dribs and drabs for about 6 months. I started with finalizing the layout, which also meant I was locking down my purchases. I already had a 2 screen G3X, GX pilot, and VP-200 system, so there really wasn’t that much worry about. Anyway using a combination of installation templates and full size photos of components, I figured out where I wanted everything to go. Then it was a matter of drawing out some reference lines to keep everything square and indexed to one another and drawing out the cut lines. I cut everything out with my Dremel undersized and filed/sanded it out to final size. That part took forever as I didn’t want to overdo it, so I took several months to get the hole sizes to where I wanted them as I was working on the panel kind of hit or miss while I was working on other sections. Once I was reasonably satisfied with the panel cutouts, I needed to determine what holes needed to be cut into the subpanel. I really needed one big one for the radio stack, but in the end cut a couple of 2” holes on each side to allow some direct wiring runs to the firewall. Back to the radio stack, I had ordered trays for my audio panel, SL 30, and GTN 650. I temp stalled the panel to the upper forward fuse and with the help of the trays figured out where the cutout need to be. After I made the cut, I went back and added reinforcing angles around the perimeter of the hole per instructions in the plans. Of course, I won’t really know if I got the alignment of the radio stack between the panel and sub-panel correct until I have the actual radios to install.
