Brief Description:  Panel Planning

At Airventure I had some good discussion with the Garmin people who gave me some additional insight as to why things are configured the way they are. Some of it has to do with the FAA. For example, you can't control a nav radio from the G3X touch panel like you can on the certified G1000 because the FAA won't allow it. Nav functions (VOR) must all be located in a certified box.

I also learned there is no need for an audio panel since the G3X has the audio function built into the software. The only thing you gain from a dedicated audio panel is it's a little simpler for a passenger to tune music in on their headset. In my view it's not worth the extra money.

After attending my EAA chapter BBQ I had a good discussion with our tech counselor, Dave Prizio. Originally I wanted two comms and two navs along with a certified GPS. Dave recommended I delete the second nav since, in his experience, he rarely uses even the one he has in his plane. Everything these days can be done from the IFR GPS. There is little need for a second nav receiver. I still intend on two comms, but one will be a remote. The GPS (either a GNS650 or GNS750) will have nav/comm included.

So with this in mind I modified my panel and came up with several options. If I delete the second nav/comm and replace with a remote comm I save $3.5k. If I go to a GNS650 that's another $5k savings. That's pretty significant and worthy of consideration. As a side benefit, it opens up room on the panel to include the canopy jettison handle.

I spent some time figuring out what buttons should go on the joystick. In another post I'll go over my logic for that.

The #2 nav/comm is deleted on this option and the canopy jettison handle is added. $3.5k savings.

Here the GNS650 is used for an additional $5k savings. Panel now about $39k.
