Short Description: Lift failure and damage
|
I had pulled the RV-6A out of the hangar and was lowering the -10 to work on it when the jack screw mechanism failed, dropping the lift yoke and fuselage to the floor from about 3 or 4 feet. At first glance, the airframe was intact but a closer inspection showed that the side and bottom skins were wrinkled just aft of the mains and spar. The structure itself looks Ok but I won't know for sure until the skins are off - which means removing the top and tail cone, as well as the engine and instrument panel, as well as the floors and seat pans. I won't trust a lift again, so I'm on the waiting list for a hangar for the -6A and it looks like I'll be working backwards on the -10 for a bit.
